Social Media & Human Behavior: The Purge

There has to be a psychology class all about social media behavior. The latest phenomenon that has caught my attention is the purge. People get a sense of power or importance by announcing that they are cutting down their friends list. Some argue that if there is no measurable or obvious interaction–reading someone’s posts is not good enough–then there’s no point to being online friends. Others use beliefs or ideologies as their criteria. Heaven forbid if someone doesn’t have our exact same way of thinking. A few take a much more aggressive approach by making a clearly divisive “bait” post and culling anyone drawn out in disagreement. I like to think I am in the majority of people who just want their voice heard. The more, the merrier.
